The Mariners
Team is usually made up of 16-year-olds from Alameda High School,
Encinal High School and St. Joseph High School.
The first
year of the Mariners was in 1993. Prior to 1993, the very talented
16 years olds would play for the Alameda Merchants. Usually only a
few would make the team because they were competing with 17 and 18
year olds. If a 16 year old did not make the Merchant team, they
would usually play for the 16 year Alameda Legion Team.
Tim Nelson
and Chuck Mosely were the first managers for the 1993 and 1994. The
players played 28 and 30 game seasons and had to the opportunity to
play a tournament in Tahoe. They made the Northern California State
Tournament both years.
Nick
Ferreira had two very successful years managing the team in 1995 and
1997 (16-18 year old team in 1996). In 1995 the Mariners finished
3rd and in 1997 2nd in the Northern California State Tournament. In
1997 the Mariners defeated the State Champion once in the Northern
California double elimination tournament.
In 1999 John
Harris became the manager and the Mariners won the Northern
California State Championship. They represented Northern California
in the Southwest Regional Tournament in Bakersfield. They also won
the very prestigious Mister "C" Fourth of July Tournament
in Fairfield competing against 17 and 18 years olds. Dontrelle
Willis (rookie of the year for the World Champion Florida Marlins)
was one of the key players on that year team.
Tim Marr was
the manager in 2001 and the Mariners played a very competitive
schedule playing against many 16-18 year teams (no Merchant Team
that year). The Mariners finished 3rd in the Reno Firecracker
Baseball Tournament and played against some of the best 18 and under
teams in the 17th Annual Sapa/Johnsrud Baseball Tournament in
Whitefish Montana. The Mariners finished the season on a very high
note when they finished 2nd in Northern California State Tournament.
Jim Tench
(Manager) and Steve Yamasaki (also known as Coach Yam who has been
involved with the Alameda Babe Ruth Program 22 out of the last 28
years) continued the fine tradition of the Mariners program from
2002 to the present. Playing a heavy packed schedule of 44 games in
2002 and 52 games in 2003, the Mariners won the Reno Firecracker
Baseball Tournament in both 2002 and 2003, won Labor Day Wood Bat
Invitation in Reno 2003 and played in the Northern California State
Championship 2003.
