TRAINING (Practice Games) |

SPRING
TRAINING GUIDELINES
Spring
Training games will be in uniform, with regular umpires and regular
pitching limitations,
but they will not count towards the Regular Season standings.
Visitors
in the first base dugout, home team in the 3rd base dugout. Visitors take
a 10 minute infield 20 minutes prior to the game. Home team takes a 10
minute infield 10 minutes prior to the game.
No
new inning after 2 1/2 hours from the start of the game. 10 run rule
applies after the losing team has had 5 at-bats (and at least as many
at-bats as the winning team).
Teams
can use a continuous batting order or use the EH-Extra hitter, which is a
10 man batting order. Minimum
play rules (two at-bats and at least 3 defensive innings for each player)
applies unless a player is being disciplined and the opposing coach is
told about it before the game (unless the disciplinary problem occurs
during the game).
The
red carpet area in front of both dugouts at the College is a dead ball
area, so your players can be on the red carpet. To be a valid catch, a
defensive player must have both feet off of the carpet area. If he catches
it off of the carpet area and his momentum carries him onto the red
carpet, the ball is live and can be thrown from there. If he falls down on
the red carpet or in the dugout, the ball is dead. The catch still counts
and all runners get to advance one base. If the catch is made with one or
both feet on the red carpet area, it is a foul ball and not a catch.
To
speed the game up at the College, the on deck batter should get all foul
balls that go behind the catcher. They should also get all wild pitches
and passed balls if there is no one on base and it is not strike 3.Please
remind your players that fake tags are not allowed. They are dangerous to
the incoming runner (who may decide he has to slide at the last minute and
possibly break an ankle). The umpire can also rule obstruction and give
the runner an additional base if he thinks the runner possibly could have
made another base.
Managers
and coaches - many of the umpires are working their first game on the big
diamond. Just as your players may make some mistakes, these umpires may
make some mistakes. I have told them all that these are practice games and
the managers and coaches wouldn't be too concerned with umpire calls. In
each game I have at least one experienced umpire helping the less
experienced umpire.

with a round robin (shown above), ending with double elimination. If all
teams end up 1-1, the team with the lowest runs scored against gets a bye
while the other two teams play each other on the 4th day. If there's a tie
in runs scored against, resolve by head-to-head. The next tiebreaker would
be run differential with a maximum of 10 per game. These are the same as
the World Series tiebreakers. The winner on the 4th day plays the other
1-1 team for the championship on the 5th day. If teams end up 2-0, 1-1
& 0-2, the 0-2 team is out. The 1-1 team has to play the 2-0 team on
the 4th day. If the 1-1 team wins, there is an "if" game. If

Start
with a round robin (shown above), ending with double elimination. If all
teams end up 1-1, the team with the lowest runs scored against gets a bye
while the other two teams play each other on the 4th day.
If
this occurs, the "if game" should immediately follow the 4th
game, as the same two teams would be playing. |
