If you're playing a team from another league and want to see a game summary,
the Alameda team will have to write/submit the story, regardless of who is Home or Away.

Week 3 (April 15-20)

  • Brown Brothers Shoes Giants 9, Alameda Towne Centre Cubs 5
The Giants fifth regular season game brought their fourth win as Jordan Jarrell turned in an impressive 5 innings on the mound and Kyle Renner came in to shut the door for the Giants the last two innings of the game. Offensive highlights for the Giants included two-hit nights for Chris Fenk, Miguel Padilla and Daryon Royster-Brown. But the hitting didn't stop there, as Chuy Hernandez, Gene Chiu, Adam Rees, Scott Rude and Jordan Jarrell all contributed hits to the evening. Giants' defense was led by catcher Padilla, who kept the balls in front of him all evening at the challenging College of Alameda. Jaydon Tobler saved a Cubs run with his speedy catch in right field and the combination of centerfielder Tomas Martinez-Granata to shortstop Rees to catcher Padilla resulted in a tag out at home as Cub Miles Baxter tried unsuccessfully to stretch a double into an in-the-park homerun. Once again the Giants turned in a team effort to come out on top.

  • Emerald Packaging Yankees 3, Bowzers Pizza Indians 4
This game was a match-up between two leaders in the American League, and the turned out to be as exciting as expected. Both teams showed up with excellent pitching and good defense as their tools for success, and this game was no exception to that either. In the top of the first inning, the Yankees got two runs on a sharp base hit from Wes Irons, and that lead continued until the third inning when Trevor Toy tagged on a fly ball to short left-center. In the fifth inning, the Yankee's Travis Opperud scored on a ground ball by Andrew Pavao, and the Yanks led 3-1 until the sixth when Adam Yim scored on a fielder's choice by Chris Scyphers. The Yanks didn't score in the 7th, but had a great chance to win by getting the first two Indian batters out in the bottom half of the seventh. Then the Indians went to work, with walks to Mike Copple and Sam Merz, who advanced on a wild pitch. Copple tied the game when a throw to third got by the third baseman, and Ian Kayaian came to bat. Ian hit a slow grounder toward the Yankee shortstop, who had to hurry his throw to get the speedy runner. The throw got away, and Merz scored the winning run.

Kyle Renner kept the Red Sox guessing as he turned in 3 innings on the mound for the Giants, tallying 3 strike-outs. Jordan Jarrell led the offense with an impressive 3 RBI/2 hit game. Contributing to the scoring were middle-infielder Chris Fenk with 2 RBI 2 hits, catcher Miguel Padilla with 2 RBI and 1 hit, 3rd baseman Chuy Hernandez with 3 hits, centerfielder Tomas Martinez-Granata with a double and utility man Daryon Royster-Brown with a hit. Giants defense held the Red Sox to 5 runs and was highlighted by a heads-up play by first baseman Jarrell when he fielded the ball for an unassisted out at first and then alertly threw home to get the runner for the final out of the inning. Pitcher Adam Rees completed the game for his team, pitching 4 innings and racking up 8 strike-outs. Timely hitting, solid defense, and excellent pitching added up to another team win for the Giants.

The Giants fell to the Indians in the 7th inning, after an exciting game on a cold evening at the Navy field. The Giant’s threw Kyle Renner for the first 2 innings, followed by Tomas Martinez-Granata for 4 innings highlighted by 5 strike-outs, and Adam Rees pitched the last inning for the Giants. Then a Giants rally for 4 runs in the 5th put them back in the game. Two additional Giants runs scored in the 6th, including an exciting steal home by Miguel Padilla, which brought the two teams to a tie at the bottom of the 6th. The Giants could not hold the Indian hitters, however, as they scored the go ahead run in the 7th and Indians pitcher Chris Schypers struck out the side for the win in the 7th. The Brown Brothers Shoes Giants met their Oakland competition for the first time for this mid-day game on a beautiful, hot spring day. The Oakland Saints jumped out ahead of the Giants in the first inning, scoring 4 to the Giants 2, behind the pitching of Saints’ #13 Briton. The Giants scored on a Tomas Martinez-Granata walk, Chris Fenk single and Adam Rees single to drive them both in. Jordan Jarrell pitched the first inning for the Giants and then Martinez-Granata came in to pitch in the 2nd.

Daryon Royster-Brown relieved the Giants’ regular catcher, Miguel Padilla, in the 3rd and executed some good blocks and throws. Scott Rude had an excellent defensive game making a running catch in left field for the first out of the 3rd inning and doubling off the runner who was trying to go from 1st to 2nd. He and Jarrell also made some good digs and catches for outs at 1st during the game. In the 4th inning, Rees smacked a double to center field, but subsequently got called out at 3rd base on a steal, resulting in Chuy Hernandez and Royster-Brown being left on base after reaching on walks. In the Giants’ half of the 4th, Kyle Renner came in to pitch and got out of the inning quickly with 2 strike-outs.

Then in the 5th, The Giants left 2 runners on base and the Saints proceeded to load up the bases with no outs. Rees was brought in to pitch and got a ground ball, but two Saints runners scored on error and one scored on a successfully executed suicide squeeze, for a total of 4 runs in that inning. In the top of the 6th, the Saints brought in a new pitcher, Williams #5, and the Giants mounted a rally. Martinez-Granata led off with a single, Fenk walked, Padilla singled and Rees launched another RBI double, scoring two runners. The Giants tried to overcome the Saints again in the 7th as Kyle Renner led off with a walk, but got picked-off at 1st. Rude reached on error and Jarrell slammed a double into left field. Another walk loaded the bases, but two strike-outs by the Saints put an end to the Giants efforts.

The indians re-loaded the bases and Mike Copple duplicated that effort with another base hit to right, scoring Sam Merz and Missaggia. Alex Cardenas finished the scoring in the first on a wild pitch. The Indians added 2 in the 3rd inning with a "deja-vu" shot to right by Chris Missaggia, his 3rd and 4th RBI of the game. The Cubs didn't give up, and behind 7 runs, scored 3 in the 4th off base hits by Connor Finn, Gabe Verm, and Ian Long. They scored 3 more in the 5th on 3 walks and a base hit by Byron Buckley. Buckley, meanwhile, shut down the Indians scoring with excellent pitching, but Chris Scyphers equalled that with his own version of Dennis Eckersley.

The Washington Manor Mets jumped out ahead with two runs in the first inning, with Jordan Jarrell on the mound for the Giants in a late starting game at Stenzel Field. The Giants’ defense sparkled in the 2nd inning when Tomas Martinez-Granata made a spectacular running catch for the 2nd out. Charlie Carlise, just off the DL, reached base in the Giants half of the inning on a fielders choice, but was stranded. In the 3rd inning, with bases loaded, Scott Rude fielded a grounder at first base and threw out the runner at home. Catcher Daryon Royster-Brown then got into perfect position to tag out a second runner trying to score. Then a pop-up fell for 1 run and short-stop Adam Rees threw to Royster-Brown to get the next runner, who kicked the ball out of the catcher’s glove but was called out for not sliding.

The 4th inning proved big for the Giants with 7 runs on 4 hits. Catcher Miguel Padilla led off with a walk and stole 2nd. Rees singled and drove in Padilla and then stole 2nd. Royster-Brown walked and Carlise singled and drove home Rees. Pitcher Jarrell hit into a fielder’s choice, driving in Royster-Brown. Rude walked and went to 2nd on a passed ball, then Kyle Renner walked on a full count. The Mets brought in a new pitcher with the bases full of Giants, but Gene Chiu, his first batter, was plunked and Carlise walked home. Next, Martinez-Granata hit a fielder’s choice and scored Rude, then stole 2nd. Finally the scoring stopped with two more Giants runs on error, for a total of 7. The bottom of the 4th inning saw another web-gem running catch in center field by Martinez-Granata and the Giants held the Mets. In the 5th inning the Giants scored two more runs, as pitcher Jarrell launched a towering hit to left center for a stand-up double to drive in Carlise, whose RBI hit had just scored Rees. The Giants continued to shine defensively as Chiu caught a high fly in right field for the first out of the bottom of the 5th and alertly threw to first, nearly catching the runner off base. Jarrell left the mound with the game in his pocket after 5 innings and 5 strike-outs. Light failing, the game was called at 6 innings as the Giants got no more in their half and Rees came in to strike-out the side to end the game.

Adam Yim started on the mound for the Indians, and was able to pitch 2 innings giving up 2 runs. In the bottom of the second, the Alameda first place team took over, scoring 4 runs on base hits by Adam Yim and Trevor Toy, and a deep sacrifice fly by Chris Scyphers. The game from there on was a pitcher's duel between Scyphers and Jenson from Manor, who was also tough as nails. After the Indians took a 6-2 lead in the 5th, the Twins came back with 3 runs in the 6th to make it close, but Scyphers extinguished the fire in the 7th and the Indians won again.

A well-played and competitive game between the Brown Brothers Shoes Giants and the Oakland Hurricanes was played on May 7. Kyle Renner started on the mound for the Giants and pitched 4 innings. The Hurricanes started off stealing bases and scoring 2 runs in the 1st inning. The Giants got their first out on a pick-off to Daryon Royster-Brown at 2nd, followed by a tag out at 3rd by Chris Fenk from a throw from catcher Miguel Padilla and finally a strike-out by Renner to end the Hurricane’s half of the inning. Up to bat, the Giants countered with 2 runs of their own with Adam Rees hitting a sac fly to score Royster-Brown from 2nd and Padilla reaching on error to score Martinez-Granata. In the 2nd inning, Renner struck out two to hold the Hurricanes with a runner at 3rd, but the Giants failed to score in the bottom of the inning. The third inning was highlighted by great defense by the Giants, as with the bases loaded, they got 3 force outs at home: the first from shortstop Rees to catcher Padilla; the second from first-baseman Rude to Padilla; and the third from 2nd baseman Royster-Brown to Padilla to get the Giants back up to bat. In the Giant’s half, Martinez-Granata walked, Royster-Brown singled, then both moved up a base on a passed ball. Padilla hit a sacrifice grounder to score Martinez-Granata and Rees hit a single to score Royster-Brown and then scored on an overthrow. Charlie Carlise’s first plate appearance of the season drew cheers from the Alameda crowd as he made his premier after coming off the DL. Chuy Hernandez then walked, but was left on base as the Giants racked-up 3 runs that inning. In the 4th, neither team scored but both pitchers commanded the inning with their strike-outs. In the top of the 5th, Martinez-Granata came in to pitch for the Giants, striking out two batters. Then the Hurricanes scored on a walk, stolen base, passed ball and single hit sequence to tie the game. The Giants came up knowing they had to make something happen and with the top of the order up to bat. Martinez-Granata lined past 3rd base for a single, Rees singled and Hernandez hit an RBI single to score the lead-off hitter with the go-ahead run. In the top of the 7th as the sun was setting, Rees took the mound for the Giants and immediately third-baseman Hernandez made a barehanded juggling play to field a Hurricane hit and fired to first for the out. The team closed out the game with two strike-outs for an exciting team win over the Hurricanes 6 to 5.

Back at Stenzel after a short night of rest, the Giants of Alameda, with pitcher Tomas Martinez-Granata on the mound, met the Giants of Washington Manor. After little action in the first inning, Adam Rees led off the 2nd for Alameda with a screaming liner to left and Chris Fenk scorched a grounder down the third base line for an RBI single. Chuy Hernandez reached on a fielder’s choice and Charlie Carlise moved Hernandez to second. Jordan Jarrell and Gene Chiu walked, but the inning ended with the bases loaded. Washington Manor hit a lead-off double but Alameda defense held the runner at third to end the inning. In Alameda’s big 3rdinning, Daryon Royster-Brown hit a line drive for a double and stole third. Miguel Padilla singled to score Royster-Brown, Rees doubled down the third base line to score Padilla, and then Fenk singled to center. Hernandez singled with a line drive to center and Carlise batted in Fenk to bring the total to 4 runs for Alameda in the third inning. Martinez-Granata made short work of Washington Manor in their half of the third to bring Alameda back up to face a new Washington Manor pitcher who held them in the fourth. Washington Manor got their first run in the bottom of the 4th but then Alameda held them with runners on 2nd and 3rd. Alameda scored again in the top of the 5th as Rees walked and Hernandez drove him in from second with a sac fly to center field. Alameda’s defense got in gear in the bottom of the inning as catcher Padilla threw out a runner going to second and Royster-Brown caught a liner near second. Alameda’s Giants threatened again in the 6th as outfielder Jared Carmon singled into shallow center and stole second and Martinez-Granata walked, but both were left on base as the inning ended. Pitcher Rees came in to take the mound from Martinez-Granata, who had put in a commanding 5 innings holding the WM Giants to only 1 run. Washington Manor got its break in the 6th and scored two runs, to bring the score to Alameda 6 to Washington Manor 3, where it stayed as Alameda failed to score again in the 7th and Washington Manor went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning.

Duvernay jumped ahead by 2 in the first inning and then the Giants defense caught fire and held them when Scott Rude caught 2 pop-ups and Daryon Royster-Brown a third to end the inning. Miguel Padilla led off the second for the Giants with a single, Chuy Hernandez walked and Jarrell singled and drove in Padilla. Charlie Carlise drove in Hernandez and Rude singled, for a total of 2 runs, to bring the Giants even. In the third, Duvernay got a run and tried unsuccessfully to squeeze in a second. Both teams were quiet in the 4th and then Duvernay scored for a final time in the 5th. Chris Fenk singled in the 6th but was left on base and Tomas Martinez-Granata made a running catch in center field to save a Duvernay run in the bottom of the inning. The Giants went quietly in the 7th, unable to make up the two run deficit against their Oakland competition.

The score on the field ended up being Oakland 4, Alameda 2, however, Oakland Duvernay has been playing with ineligible players, so all such games involving ineligible players are being 'officially' changed to 7-0 forfeit wins for Alameda.

A well-played game between these two rivals made for great baseball as the Giants took on the Yankees on a warm and sunny Sunday. Travis Opperud started on the mound for the Yanks and Tomas Martinez-Granata was dealing for the Giants as he struck out the side to start the game. The Giants put the scored first when Chris Fenk singled and Daryon Royster-Brown drove him in. They threatened again in the 2nd, loading the bases with a Jordan Jarrell line drive, Charlie Carlise sac bunt, and Scott Rude single, but left them full. The Yankees scored in the top of the 3rd when Lucas Howard doubled and scored on an overthrow. Reece Kamphius singled but was thrown out at 2nd by catcher Adam Rees, Chuy Hernandez caught a hard pop-up at 3rd and the final batter struck out. For the Giants, Martinez-Granata walked, Chris Fenk hit a line drive to left and Royster-Brown's bloop single brought Martinez-Granata home. In the 4th, Hernandez caught another tricky pop-up at 3rd and neither team scored. The 5th inning belonged to Martinez-Granata as he induced two to hit to Jarrell at first base for outs and struck out the 3rd batter. The Giants came into the 5th with Scott Rude reaching on an infield single, Jared Carmon and Kyle Renner both walked to load the bases. The Yankees brought in closer Andrew Pavao who got one strike-out, then Fenk's sac fly scored Rude, Royster-Brown singled down the 3rd base line to score 2,and Rees singled, bringing the score up to 5 to 1. In the 6th, the Yankees loaded the bases with one out when Rees took over on the mound from Martinez-Granata, allowing one run and then getting out of the inning when the Giants turned a crucial double play. The Giants scored once more in the bottom of the 6th when Jarrell was hit by a pitch, Carlise moved him to 2nd on a fielder's choice and then stole 2nd, Rude moved him to 3rd and Jared Carmon knocked him in. It was the Yankees' turn next in the top of the 7th when the Giants missed 3 pop-ups and allowed 1 run to score before Rees struck out a batter and caught the final pop-up to end the game. In a make-up game originally scheduled for May 28, the Indians continued with force against a gritty Washington Manor Mets team. Adam Yim started on the mound for the Indians and pitched 4 shut out innings, his best performance of the year. The Indians scored one in the second and three in the third on hits by Dylan Holt, Chris Scyphers and Yim. Holt came to the mound in the fifth and got the first two outs, then gave up a hit to his San Leandro childhood friend Freddy Ramirez. Another hit, and then a walk loaded the bases. Dylan then walked in a run, then went to 3-0 on the next batter. He found a second wind and threw three straight pitches at the knees for strikes, ending the inning with little damage. That jump-started the Indians, who then scored 4 runs on base hits by Holt and Scyphers, then a bone-jarring 300 foot double by Jordan Jacobs that unloaded the bases. The Indians ended the game in the bottom of the sixth with 3 more runs. Final score Indians 11, Washington Manor Mets 1.

The Giants fell hard to the Indians on a chilly Father's Day morning as Chris Scyphers pitching dominated with a complete game shut-out. Pitching for the Giants was a team affair, with Jordan Jarrell, Adam Rees, Kyle Renner and Chris Fenk all taking turns on the mound. The Giants did hit, with Jarrell, Scott Rude and Chris Fenk all going 2 for 3, Jarrell, Rees and Rude doubling, Miguel Padilla singling, and several fielders' choice hits, but they could not get anyone in to score. Rude had his best day so far at the plate, slamming a double and single in this game. The Indians' Dylan Holt seemed to always be getting a hit and running the bases and scored two of the Indians' runs. The Giants' defense woke up to execute a triple play, with Chris Fenk catching a fly ball at shortstop and throwing to Charlie Carlise at second to catch his runner off base and Charlie then throwing to Jarrell at first who also caught his runner off base. The Giants also had a fine play in the outfield as Jaydon Tobler robbed Scyphers of a line drive hit to right field in the second inning and a double play when Rees fielded a grounder at shortstop, stepped on second to get the runner and threw to Jarrell at first to get the batter out.
