Tournament Bracket

Starts Thursday, July 5th

All games will be played at Carter

Start with a round robin, ending with double elimination. If all teams end up 1-1, the team with the lowest runs scored against gets a bye while the other two teams play each other on the 4th day. If there's a tie in runs scored against, resolve by head-to-head. The next tiebreaker would be run differential with a maximum of 10 per game. These are the same as the World Series tiebreakers. The winner on the 4th day plays the other 1-1 team for the championship on the 5th day. If teams end up 2-0, 1-1 & 0-2, the 0-2 team is out. The 1-1 team has to play the 2-0 team on the 4th day. If the 1-1 team wins, there is an "if" game. If this occurs, the "if game" should immediately follow the 4th game, as the same two teams would be playing.

Game Summaries...

Alameda’s Spenser Linney pitched a gem to open the 13-15 Year Old All-Star District 4 Tournament with a 5-2 win over host Oakland at Carter Field, Thursday July 3.

Linney, a left handed hurler, pitched all seven innings in dominant style, yielding 2 runs (1 earned), on just 4 hits, striking out 8 while walking 2.

Oakland countered with their lefty, Langston Calhoun, who also pitched a complete game.

Oakland wasted no time with leadoff batter Ryan Tuck blasting a double off the centerfield fence, just short of a home run. Derrick Parnell singled in the RBI; Oakland 1-0.

Alameda responded in the 1st with a Daniel Andrada’s blast down the right field line, a triple. He scored on Enrique Padilla’s infield single; game tied 1-1.

In the 2nd, Zac Oransky’s speed and daring baserunning netted a run. He led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on Cameron Braband’s bunt single; Oransky took home when Oakland ignored him on the play at first; Alameda 2-1.

Alameda increased their lead in the 4th, Braband singled to left, Adam Boyd worked a walk, and Andrada reached on a fielder’s choice when the Oakland’s shortstop Tuck made a great play to erase Braband at third. Both Boyd and Andrada were running on a full count pitch to Padilla; it was ruled a ball, and an errant throw to 2nd by the catcher resulted in Boyd scoring and Andrada going to third. Andrada later scored on a wild pitch; Alameda now led 4-1.

Oakland rallied in the 6th, Calhoun reached on an error; Parnell had his 2nd RBI with a hard single to right field. Jacai DeNevue hit a rocket line drive, deflected off Linney’s glove (in a scary moment), but Linney put out the rally with a strikeout to end the threat; Alameda’s lead trimmed to 4-2.

Alameda came back in the 6th; pinch hitter Chris Lancaster launched a double off the right field fence. He scored on Padilla’s hard single to right. Lancaster loves hitting at Carter, his double made him 5 for 5 in Oakland, with a homer, triple, 2 doubles, and a single. Alameda led 5-1.

In the 7th, Oakland’s Ashton Collins worked a 2 out walk, however, the game ended on Linney’s 8th strikeout.

Oakland hitters included Ryan Tuck with the double, Jackai DeNevue’s single, and Derrick Parnell’s two RBI singles.

Alameda slugger Enrique Padilla was 3 for 3 with a walk and 2 RBI, Cameron Braband was 2 for 3, Daniel Andrada had a triple, Chris Lancaster’s double, and Zac Oransky & Richard Roque both singled.

Alameda outfielder Chris Lancaster snatches victory from a one run defeat with a “walk-off” hit in the 7th!

Alameda starting right hander Adam Boyd started the game; issued a walk, hit a batter, then yielded a Carter Field 3 Run Homer in the first inning; followed by a single. His catcher, Dylan Armijo, threw out the would be base stealer. Boyd bore down and yielded just one additional run on 3 singles, while walking 2 more, hitting 1 more, and striking out 4. Relievers Tyler Cobb and Daniel Andrada finished the 7th inning.

Washington Manor countered with future World Teammate Pauselius who pitched into the 5th inning and was relieved by Fisher for the rest of the game.

Washington Manor’s 1st inning fireworks began with Leytem working the walk, sacrificed nicely by Pomykala, and Branscum was hit by a full count pitch. Pauselius fouled off several pitches before hitting the ball over the fence for 3 RBI. Abate then singled; Washington Manor 3-0.

Alameda’s 2nd was started with a Richard Roque single, replaced on the bases when Anthony Ratto’s bunt was played to erase Roque. Zac Oransky reached by error and started a 2 out rally with RBI singles in succession by Cameron Braband, Chris “I Own Carter” Lancaster, and Boyd. In addition, Lancaster scored on an errant throw and Boyd was erased on the play when he stopped en route 3rd by misreading the umpire’s intent/signal; Alameda 4-3.

Alameda added on in the 3rd – Andrada walked, Enrique Padilla singled, and Roque grounded to the third baseman who made a great throw to the plate to get Andrada attempting to slide home. Again with 2 out, Oransky blasted a double off the fence to score Padilla; Alameda 5-3.

Washington Manor staged their own 2 out rally in the 5th with a Chavez single, Branscum walk, and a RBI single by Pauselius; Alameda 5-4.

Alameda got the run back in their half of the 5th – Padilla singled, Roque reached by error, and Anthony Ratto singled home Padilla. Alameda 6-4.

Washington Manor was far from done. In the 7th, Temple worked a walk. Leytem drilled a shot to third, singling off the glove. Pomykala placed a 2nd perfect sacrifice setting up the heart of the order. Chavez got an RBI on an error, Branscum had an RBI single, Abate loaded the bases with a single, and Vincenzi drove in the go ahead run on a walk; Washington Manor 7-6.

Alameda started the 7th in a hole. However, with one out, Anthony Ratto was hit by a pitch, Oransky singled to right, and Dylan Armijo worked a walk. After 2 out, Chris Lancaster came to the plate with 2 out, bases loaded, and trailing by one run. During the regular season Lancaster hit for the “cycle” at Carter (Single, Double, Triple, and Homer in one game). Yesterday he blasted a double off the fence. In this game he already singled off the fence, made a rare out, and walked. The flavor of the day was, rally with 2 out! And, Lancaster didn’t disappoint – he hammered a pitch cleanly into right field and drove in two runs to win the game – and enjoyed 14 teammates celebrating around him.

Washington Manor collected 8 hits; Pauselius had 2 including a 3-run-homer, Abate had 2 singles, and singles by Leytem, Chavez, Branscum, and Gonzales.

Alameda got 11 hits; a double and single by Oransky, 2 singles by Lancaster, 2 singles by Braband, 2 singles by Padilla, and singles by Boyd, Roque, and A.Ratto.

Washington Manor forces a second game for the District 4 Championship with a complete game 3 hitter by Chavez.

Washington Manor’s catcher/slugger took the mound in a potential elimination game and threw a dominant 3 hitter and Pauselius hits another first inning homer.

Washington Manor’s Pauselius started the 1st inning again with a bang. Leytem worked another lead off walk, Chavez singled, and Abate walked. Pauselius fouled off a 3rd strike then launched a grand slam! Solanzano reached on an error and scored the inning’s 5th run on a Olsen double; Washington Manor 5-0.

Washington Manor got 2 more in the 5th with a Chavez walk, Abate single, Pauselius walk, and Solarzano had an RBI single. Pauselius scored on an error.

Washington Manor completed their scoring in the 6th, leytem singled, Pomykala walked, Chavez hit a sac fly to score Leytem and Abate singled in Pomykala. Washington Manor 9-0.

Alameda finally broke through in the 6th - Enrique Padilla drew a leadoff walk and scored on Richard Roque’s RBI error. Alameda threatened by loading the bases with a Zac Oransky single and Cameron Braband was hit by a pitch, but Chavez struck out the final batter in the frame; Washington Manor 9-1.

Alameda’s 3 hits were a double by Roque, and 2 singles by Oransky.

Washington Manor had 10 hits. Abate was 3 for 3 with a double and walk, the Pauselius Grand Slam, a double by Olsen, and singles by Leytem, Pomykala, Chavez, Solarzano, and Temple.

The Oakland hosts provided a great setting for the winner take all final championship game for the District 4 Title.  Both teams had identical 2-1 records, both won once head-to-head, and both are going to the Northern California State Championship Tournament – Alameda and Washington Manor 13-15 Year Old Babe Ruth Baseball All-Stars dueled in a great afternoon game at Carter Field.

After 3 games in the week, both teams dug deep for pitching.  Alameda started right hander Tyler Cobb and Washington Manor countered with Vincenzi.  Cobb went 4 plus innings, was relieved by Dominic Ratto, and Spenser Linney finished the game.  Vincenzi pitched into the 2nd, was relieved by Abate who gave the ball to Fisher in the 4th.  Linney and Fisher both pitched really well; only one run was scored on these fine closers.

Washington Manor started the game with yet another 1st inning homer – this time a solo shot by Chavez.  Alameda breathed a collective sigh of relief when Pauselius was left in the on-deck circle (he hit a 3 run homer in the 1st on Saturday and earlier in the day hit a grand slam in the 1st).  Washington Manor 1-0.

Alameda responded quickly – Adam Boyd singled to right, moved to second on Anthony Ratto’s walk, got to third on Enrique Padilla’s infield hit, and scored on Richard Roque’s bruise (he was hit by a pitch).  A. Ratto scored Zac Oranskys deep sac fly.  Although Alameda batted 8 in the frame, good pitching limited the damage to just two runs; Alameda 2-1.

Alameda produced 4 more runs after 2 quick outs with a hit by A.Ratto, a RBI single by Padilla, a RBI double by Roque, and a deep blast 2-run home run by Zac Oransky.  Oransky legged out inside-the-park homers in the past, but this was his first ever “deep fly.”  Alameda 6-1.

In the 3rd, Alameda batted 8 again – Cameron Braband walked, Dylan Armijo walked, Tyler Cobb bunted, but 1st baseman Pauselius made a great play to get Braband at third. Boyd hit a single to score Armijo, Cobb scored on an error, A.Ratto walked, and Padilla hit a deep fly to score Boyd; Alameda 9-1.

Washington Manor trimmed the lead in the 4th with a Torres hit over the third base bag, an Abate hit up the middle, a RBI single to left by Vincenzi, and an RBI ground out by Solarzzano; Alameda 9-3.

Alameda got one back in their half of the 4th- Braband was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored after walks to Cobb, Boyd, and A.Ratto.  Alameda 10-3.

Washington Manor was NOT done.  They rallied in the 5th – a double by Fisher; RBI near-homer double off the fence by Leytem, an RBI infield error by Pomykala and a single by Torres.  A ground out RBI by Abate, Pauselius was hit by a pitch, Vincenzi reached on an error, and Solazzano had an RBI single to left.  Just like that, the score was 10-8 and the tying run was at first.  Alameda ’s Ace Lefty, Spenser Linney, took the mound.  Picked off the runner at first, and induced an inning ending pop-up.  Alameda preserved the 10-8 lead.

In the 7th, Washington Manor’s Abate blasted a one-out double, but Linney got the final two outs and preserved Cobb’s win.

Washington Manor bashed 11 hits; the homer by Chavez; a single and double by Abate, a single and double by Fisher, and a double by Leytem; 2 singles by Torres; and singles by Pauselius, Vincenzi, and Solarzzano.

Alameda had 8 hits; the homer by Oransky, 2 doubles by Roque, 2 singles by Boyd, 2 singles by Padilla, and a single by A.Ratto.

Both teams will advance to the Northern California State Championship Tournament.
As Champion of District 4, Alameda faces the Champion of District 6 (Belmont, Mountain View , Palo Alto or San Mateo) at 4PM Saturday July 12.
Washington Manor will face the Champion of District 7 (East Sacramento, Elk Grove, Galt, Natomas, or Woodland) at 7PM Saturday July 12.
The games are at the San Leandro Ballpark, admission will be charged and the snack bar will be stocked.
Come support both District 4 teams – they both look good and expect to advance far into the tournament

Alameda's Left-handed ace, Spenser Linney started for the District 4 Champions and gave up just six hits and two walks in six innings. However, two hits followed the two walks for a pair of runs in the 4th, and a leadoff double in the 5th led to two more runs, and another leadoff double in the 6th netted the final run for visiting District 6 Champions from Palo Alto. Dominic Ratto pitched a scoreless 7th inning.

Palo Alto's hitting stars included Hannon with a double and single, Hume with a double, and singles by Lockareff, Bowers, and Braff.

Alameda's Anthony Ratto tied the game with a 2-RBI single in the 5th, and teammate Daniel Andrada's 2-RBI double off the glove of the right fielder cemented the extra-inning win over their District 2 rival from Sonoma.

District 4 Champion Alameda and District 2 Champion Sonoma played in the 13-year-old, the 14-year-old, and repeated as District Champions again this year in the (13-15)-year-old division for the Northern California State Championship. Sonoma handed the 2006 13's both of their losses, Alameda finished 3rd and Sonoma 2nd to District 5 Champions from Tri-Valley (who won the World Series as 13's in 2006).

Alameda started Tyler Cobb; he yielded a single and walk in the first inning, while striking out the side. In the 2nd, Branconi led off with a single, was sacrificed to 2nd by Cameron, and a single and stolen base by Priter set up two in scoring position with one out. A strikeout brought Deely to the plate with 2 out; he crushed a triple to deep center, scoring two, and Deely scored on a passed ball to put Sonoma up 3-0.

Sonoma's pitcher Tyler Rose buzzed through the Alameda's first 8 hitters with 3 strikeouts. However, with two outs in the 3rd, Cobb worked a walk, and scored on Adam Boyd's double over the centerfielder, trimming the Sonoma lead to 3-1.

Cobb yielded a 2 out double in the 3rd to Clementino; 4th inning single to Rose, doubled-off on a smash liner by Dunkle to Alameda's third baseman Enrique Padilla, preventing Sonoma from scoring.

In the Alameda 5th, Cameron Braband scorched a single to center. Pinch hitter Joe Serventi went the other way with a soft single to right. Cobb sacrificed them both into scoring position and Boyd walked the bases full. Anthony Ratto kept up his hot state hitting with a 2 RBI single to left. The inning was abruptly halted when Padilla's hot liner was speared by first baseman Branconi for a double play. Game tied 3-3!

Cobb handed the ball to Alameda's Lefty Ace, Spenser Linney, with one out and one on in the 6th. Linney struck out two around a walk to end the frame. Sonoma mounted a huge threat in the 7th, Lucia walked, was sacrificed to 2nd by Deely, and went to third on Rose's 3rd hit; then Rose stole 2nd. Dunkle was intentionally walked to load the bases bringing up a bases-loaded one-out situation with the game on the line. A missed suicide squeeze yielded a crucial out, followed by a huge strikeout to preserve the tie.

Alameda, with the momentum swing, came up in the 8th to face pitcher Alton who came in to relieve in the 6th. Padilla shot a ball into right for a single and Richard Roque dropped a hit over first. Zac Oransky, expected to bunt, drilled a shot to left with Padilla scoring on his double. Andrada followed with a 2-strike double off the glove of the right fielder to plate Padilla and Oransky to complete the scoring.

Sonoma's 8th inning rally, two walks around a strikeout, was snuffed when Linney struck out the final two batters to seal his win. Sonoma also battled extra innings with Tri-Valley Sunday, dropping a tough 9 inning game, 4-2.

Alameda (2-1) returns to face fellow District 4 team Washington Manor (2-1) in an elimination game Wednesday at 5PM; both teams are in the final 4. The two undefeated teams, Tri-Valley (2-0) and Palo Alto (2-0 - wins over Alameda and Washington Manor) face off at 8PM.

Alameda’s Dominic Ratto Throws a No-Hitter!

Alameda advanced to the final three teams in the Babe Ruth Northern California State Championship Tournament with a masterpiece of pitching by Dominic Ratto; Alameda 11, Washington Manor 0. Ratto went the distance yielding two walks and striking out two. He retired the first five, issued a walk that was caught stealing, retired five more, shrugged off consecutive errors, then retired seven of the last eight batters in the game.

Alameda made the most of their four hits using 12 walks and 3 hit batsmen to score 11 runs. Key hits included an RBI single by Anthony Ratto, a single by Enrique Padilla, an RBI single by Richard Roque, and a two run single by Tyler Cobb.

But the day clearly belonged to Dominic Ratto, who used just 71 pitches to dispatch his fellow District 4 rival.

District 4 Host Washington Manor (2-2) finished the State Championship Tournament in an impressive 4th place. District 4 Champion Alameda (3-1) advances to play the losing team of the night contest between unbeaten District 5 Champion Tri-Valley (2-0) and District 6 Champion Palo Alto (2-0) on Thursday at 7:30 PM. The winner of the Thursday game advances to the State Championship Day on Friday, but needs to defeat the unbeaten team twice. Friday’s first game is at 5PM. All games at the San Leandro Ballpark.

Game #5:   Alameda 7, Palo Alto 3
Thursday, July 17

Alameda won their fourth game in a row in the State Tournament after an opening game loss to Palo Alto. Given the opportunity to avenge their only loss with an elimination game Thursday against Palo Alto, Alameda relied upon Jon-Mykal Reyes and Dylan Armijo to lead them to the win in front of a great crowd from Alameda.

Jon-Mykal Reyes started the game with two scoreless innings. His team took advantage of two errors and scored three runs for him in the second. Reyes allowed one run on three consecutive hits in the third; and Alameda batters responded by getting that run back in their half of the third when Cameron Braband singled in Daniel Andrada, who scorched a double down the 3rd base line. All of Andrada’s hits as a ’08 all-star have been for extra bases.

Dylan Armijo took over the mound in the 4th, allowing a single run on a pair of hits. Alameda sluggers, however, answered in their 4th with two runs on an Adam Boyd walk, Enrique Padilla flair double down the right field line, and a Richard Roque 2-RBI smash single to left. Palo Alto Scored again in the 5th; but again, Alameda responded with another run on three more Palo Alto errors.

Reyes got the important win; Armijo got the save – as they did in High School several times.

Palo Alto’s hitters included Matt Crowder who was 3 for 4 with a double; and singles by Travis Bowers, Danny Diekroeger, TJ Braff, Ryan Lockareff, Austin Hume, and Cory Tenanes.

Alameda’s hits were by Enrique Padilla who doubled and singled, Daniel Andrada with a double, and singles by Adam Boyd, Richard Roque, and Cameron Braband.

District 6 Champion Palo Alto (2-2) finished third in the State Championship Tournament. District 4 Champion Alameda (4-1) advances to play unbeaten District 5 Champion Tri-Valley (3-0) Friday at 5PM and Alameda needs to win and force a second game at @ 8PM in order to win the Tournament.

Game #6:   Alameda 2, Tri-Valley 3 (9) - CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
Friday, July 18

Alameda started Adam Boyd and Tri-Valley started Will Anderson.

Boyd hit the first batter, but retired the next 3 to end the first inning. Anderson gave up a walk to Anthony Ratto, a single to Enrique Padilla, and Richard Roque drove in Ratto on an infield out. Tri-Valley tied it in their 2nd when David Camarena, who reach on a hit by pitch, scored on John Linney's double to left.

Alameda took the lead when Padilla was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on an errant pick-off attempt, and scored on Roque's infield out.

Boyd kept battling, leaving the bases loaded in the 3rd; stranding a lead-off walk in the 4th, and retiring the side in the 5th. He gave the ball to Spenser Linney in the sixth with two on and one out in the 6th. Linney induced a double play to end the inning.

Meanwhile, Anderson was keeping Alameda off the board. He yielded a leadoff single to Chris Lancaster in the 5th who was sacrificed to 2nd by Dylan Armijo, but was stranded. Enrique Padilla led off the 6th with a single, but was stranded.

In the bottom of the 7th, Alameda still clung to the 2-1 lead. Michael Thoefanopoulous was hit by a pitch to start the inning, a failed sacrifice was popped up; however, back to back singles by Cameron Rowland and Chris Keck tied the game. Linney bore down to retire the next two and send the game into extra innings.

Alameda threatened in the 8th and 9th with lead-off walks. However, new pitcher Nick Piscotty induced a double play in the 8th, and an odd play, catcher to right field to shortstop, got the runner in the 9th. Daniel Andrada threatened with a 2 out single in the 9th, but was stranded.

Tri-Valley also opened the 8th and 9th with lead-off walks. A failed bunt in the 8th led to that walk being stranded at 1st. However, in the 9th, the walk was followed by consecutive singles, again by Rowland and Keck. One infield grounder was an out at home, setting up the final at-bat. Garrett Moore hit a line drive, that was just off the glove at second base. An inch lower would probably been a double play and a 10th inning for both teams.

Alameda (4-2) finished a proud second to the 3 time State Champion Tri-Valley (4-0). Tri-Valley continues in the Southwest Regional Tournament. The core of the Alameda Team moves on to prepare for the World Team Tournament.
