Each team is expected to recruit a Team Publicity Person.
That person's responsibility will be to write "brief" summaries of the team's Home Games
and submit them for publication.

If your team does not have a Publicity Person,
and no stories are submitted,
game summaries will not appear for your team.

Scores vs. Game Summaries:

Submitting scores and submitting game summaries are two different responsibilities.

  • SCORES - Required
Scores must be submitted to the webmaster (grigg12@comcast.net) after every game by the winning coach.
(Exception - If you're playing at Inter-League game, you must submit your score win or lose.)
Scores are important and are required to maintain our league Standings.

  • GAME SUMMARIES - Optional
Game summaries are nice to have (and a good way to support our sponsors) and are generally prepared and submitted by a volunteer parent (see Publicity Person info below), however, a coach may prepare the game summaries too if they prefer.  Game summaries should be prepared and submitted by the HOME TEAM following each game.  See additional guidelines below.

Publicity Person Requirements

It's simple and easy to be a team Publicity Person (and a great way to get involved with the team).
All you need to do...

  • You must have email.

  • Inform your team's manager that you'd like to be the team Publicity Person.
(If your team wants to have more than one Publicity Person and take turns... even better.)

  • Once you have your manager's approval, just submit your team's game summaries (per the guidelines below) via email to the League Publicity Coordinator with a cc to the website, as follows:

Team Publicity Person Responsibilities

  • At each game, the publicity person should keep a "simple summary" of the game. Obviously, the score, but also: Who pitched, number of strikeouts/walks, who got on base and how (hits/walks), good defensive plays, etc.

  • After the game, the HOME Team (identified on the schedule in BOLD) needs to go over to the visiting team's publicity person and ask for any highlights they'd like to include. If no publicity person can be located, talk to their team statistician or a coach.

Exception:  The “Home team” rule does not apply when playing inter-league games.
If you’re playing Washington Manor, San Leandro or any other non-Alameda team,
the Alameda team MUST submit the game summary.

  • The HOME Team publicity person must then write a brief game summary including information from both teams.

    REMEMBER:  KEEP IT POSITIVE...
This isn't the Big Leagues... these are still kids... so keep it positive.
It's fine to "generally" mention errors, strikeouts or other mistakes, but don't mention individual names.
For example, "The team won the game despite numerous errors in the field."  That's fine.
Reserve identifying players by name for when they do something positive.

  • Submit your game summary via email to the League Publicity Coordinator (your-name-here <--need a volunteer) with a 'cc' to the website (grigg12@comcast.net) no later than the day following the game. If not submitted on time, chances are the story will NOT be submitted to the newspapers... though ALL stories will be published on our website.

Submissions:

REQUIREDIf you submit a game summary, you must prepare a short 75-100 word story.  We know that's not very much information, but that's the size restriction imposed by the newspaper. The newspaper also recommends listing only 5 player names per team, per story.  (See sample 'short version' story below.)

WARNING...
Stories that are over 100 words
will not be forwarded to the newspaper.

OPTIONAL:  The single short version summary is all that's required, however, if you'd also like to include a second longer 200 word version of the game summary to go on the website, you can do so... but it's optional.  If you don't include a second long version, then your short-version story will be submitted to both the newspaper and the website.   (See sample 'long version' story below.)

Important:  When preparing summaries, try to include a number of names from both teams each week, and while not ignoring the more prominent players (who may be mentioned more frequently) try to include different players when efforts warrant it.

Also:  Always include the team sponsor's name in the title, e.g.:
Brown Brothers Shoes Giants-6, Rodgers Trucking Tigers-5
The sponsors are all listed on our Teams Page.

  • The Babe Ruth Publicity Coordinator will then consolidate/edit the stories (as necessary) and submit the stories to the Alameda Journal and Alameda Sun for publication.

Submitting Stories:

  • Prepare your stories in an email message (not an attached Word document).
If you prefer to work in Word (or another program) write your story in the other application and then, when finished, cut-n-paste it into the email message.

  • Send the email to:

Sample Stories:

  • Shorter Version 75-100 words (for newspaper):

National Metal Fabricators Cardinals 2, Rodger's Trucking Yankees 1
It was mostly a pitcher's duel until the 4th inning when Yankees first baseman Tom Moran hit a line drive single, advanced to 2nd on a passed ball and then scored on a sacrifice to deep right. The Cards later rallied for 2 runs in the 6th. Bill Stone walked and stole second, followed by back-to-back doubles by Brad Mills and David Powell to score 2 runs and take the lead.  The Yankee's starting pitcher, Tim Jones, pitched 4 scoreless innings with 5 strikeouts. The Cardinals countered with starter Brad Mills who allowed only 1-run himself, with 6 strikeouts in 5 innings of work.

  • Longer Version (Optional) 175- 200 words (for website):

National Metal Fabricators Cardinals 2, Rodger's Trucking Yankees 1
It was mostly a pitcher's duel until the 4th inning when Yankees first baseman Tom Moran hit a line drive single, advanced to 2nd on a passed ball and then scored on a sacrifice by Bill Morse to deep right. The Cards later rallied for 2 runs in the 6th. Bill Stone walked and stole second, followed by back-to-back doubles by Brad Mills and shortstop David Powell to score 2 and take the lead. The Cardinal bullpen then came in and did a good job shutting down a late-inning bases loaded threat by the Yankees to seal the win.  The Yankee's starting pitcher, Tim Jones, pitched 4 scoreless innings with 5 strikeouts. The Cardinals countered with starter Brad Mills who allowed only 1-run himself, with 6 strikeouts in 5 innings of work. Also, for the Cards: Jim Tenit went 2-for-3 with a double and Max Furth went 2-for-2 with a walk. For the Yankees: Michael Brown had a triple, and Jason Els had 3 walks. Great defensive plays were also made by Michael Timms and Chet Boone of the Yanks and Bobby Prat of the Cards.
